AUT Essentials & Essentials+
Our foundational programmes AUT Essentials and AUT Essentials+ are designed to help staff meet the challenges of teaching for the first time whilst enhancing their educational practice. The programmes contextualise teaching and learning at AUT and explore the ways in which our values and priorities inform curriculum design. AUT Essentials is a required programme designed for new casual/hourly staff with teaching responsibilities. AUT Essentials+ is a required programme designed for academic staff who are new to teaching.
AUT Essentials comprises two modules:
Module 1 Designing for Learning introduces participants to the fundamental principles of curriculum design, approaches to student learning and how to plan teaching and design learner-focused rather than content-driven teaching.
Module 2 Teaching for Learning informs participants of teaching approaches to support learning. Provides practical guidance on how to create nurturing teaching environments that foster meaningful and positive relationships, as well as designing learning that is activity, project, practice and action orientated.
AUT Essentials+ comprises five modules:
Module 3 Assessing Learning provides participants with the opportunity to discuss good principles and practice in assessment design, with a focus on designing authentic assessment. This session will review the purposes of assessment and the role it can play in helping students gauge their learning progress.
Module 4 Designing Feedback explores the crucial role that feedback plays in learning and in empowering students. It will look at how new approaches to feedback design, including peer to peer, can help students to implement feedback and be active participants in the feedback process.
Module 5 Evaluating Your Teaching explores approaches to evaluating teaching, including reflection on practice, collecting feedback from students and the value of peer review. The value in taking a scholarly approach to developing educational practice will also be discussed.
