AUT Essentials is designed to help staff meet the challenges of teaching for the first time whilst enhancing their educational practice. The programme contextualises teaching and learning at AUT and explores the ways in which our values and priorities inform curriculum design.
AUT Essentials comprises two modules:
Module 1 Designing for Learning introduces participants to the fundamental principles of curriculum design, approaches to student learning and how to plan teaching and design learner-focused rather than content-driven teaching.
Module 2 Teaching for Learning informs participants of teaching approaches to support learning. Provides practical guidance on how to create nurturing teaching environments that foster meaningful and positive relationships, as well as designing learning that is activity, project, practice and action orientated.
This is a required programme designed for new casual/hourly staff with teaching responsibilities. ‘New to teaching’ is defined as having undertaken less than one year of full-time teaching at a tertiary institution. If you have more than one year’s teaching experience, there is no attendance requirement, however, you are welcome to register to attend. Exemptions from the programme must be approved by your line manager and supported by evidence.
In this workshop session, which is Part 2 of 2, you will learn more advanced aspects of maintaining and updating content in Canvas, particularly involving the use of the 'Elements' feature for creating visually attractive and engaging content for learners.
Please feel free to bring along any images or content from your courses that you would like to have a chance to update or work on on during this session.
This session will provide you with important information on designing a one-hour teaching session. This includes:
You will also have opportunities to start to work on a session plan and discuss with fellow participants about planning a session.

In this workshop, we will use the ABC Learning Design framework from University College London (UCL) to review and visualise the learning activities embedded in your current course design. Using the framework, we support you to redesign the high-level learning activities in your course to increase productive student activities towards the course learning outcomes.
In this workshop session, you will learn about the basic communication channels that are available in Canvas, such as Announcements, Discussions and the Canvas Inbox, and practice creating effective examples of each.
